This is the document that accompanies CHISTES.EXE, which you will find
only on your registered copy of Spanish Helper Level One.
Chistes (which means 'jokes' in Spanish) is a collection of 101 old
standards which aside from being an incentive for you to register your copy
of Spanish Helper, will provide you with an additional learning aid with a
lighter edge.
To see the program (after having registered) , go to the prompt where
you have Spanish Helper installed and type Chistes. For example, if you
have installed Spanish Helper in C:\SPAN, change to the SPAN directory
and your screen should look like this:
C:\SPAN> (then you type chistes)
C:\SPAN>chistes (and hit ENTER)
and like magic you will begin to see your new collection of jokes. If you
are working from Windows, you can either go to the program manager and
click on CHISTES.EXE, or set up your own PIF to do the job.
You are presented with a joke in Spanish, and you are given the
opportunity to see and study the English translation immediately below the
original Spanish.
You should carefully take note of the translations, because all of the
jokes have been translated not literally (word for word) but rather to
convey the meaning of the words as they would be expressed in English. This
collection should serve you well as a starting point to see the rich
variety of meanings a Spanish word or phrase may have in English, and also
to appreciate the fact that literal translations seldom serve to convey
the full meaning of what is said in one language into another.
Another thing you should know is that in Spain the 'stupid person' type
of joke usually refers to people from the town of Lepe in the province of
Huelva. Just to show you how really 'stupid' they are, they have
capitalized on this fact and sponsor a yearly joke telling contest in the
town which brings in lots of money. Pretty stupid, right? Also, people from
Catalonia (catalanes) in northeastern Spain are usually the ones to get
picked on for 'stingy' jokes. Their community is one of the backbones of
Spanish economy in general, so what if they are are bit stingy? (Uh,
that's a joke, if anyone from Catalonia is reading this).
Much to the authors' regret, jokes based on sex, religion and race
have not been included in this collection (well, there are a couple of
'light' versions) in order not to offend those who are easily offended.
(If you would like something racier, get in touch and we will see what
we can do). We have tried to give you a selection of 'old favorites',
the time-tested jokes which almost everyone in the Spanish-speaking
world has heard at one time or another.
So, register your copy of Spanish Helper (read the License.doc at the
end of the program, or the order.doc from within) and enjoy!
¡ Hasta luego !
